CBCT SCANNER & 3D DENTAL IMAGING
At Baltimore Dental Co., we utilize a CBCT scanner (cone-beam computed tomography) to diagnose and treatment plan complex situations. A CBCT is a 3D x-ray image that enables the dentist to visualize more information than is seen on a traditional 2D image. CBCT imaging is becoming the standard of care for evaluating and treating root canals, implants, and orthodontic cases. Below we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about our CBCT scanner.
CBCT SCANNER FAQS
What Are The Features Of A CBCT Scanner?
At our office, we utilize the Orthophos SL 3D to obtain precise CBCT scans, which offer several key advantages. This advanced technology provides clear, diagnostic imaging, enabling our doctors to examine detailed layers of X-rays for comprehensive analysis. The digital nature of these scans allows for instant readings, streamlining the diagnostic process. Furthermore, the Orthophos SL 3D ensures a comfortable, fast, and simple imaging experience for our patients. We also offer the convenience of exporting the scanned files to a thumb drive, facilitating seamless sharing with other healthcare providers.
Why Take A CBCT Image?
CBCT images are taken when it is necessary for assessing a patient’s treatment needs. The CBCT allows our doctors to determine bone levels and density, areas of infection, nerve locations, fractured tooth roots, and so much more. If you are unsure of which tooth is causing a problem and we are unable to determine the issues with a typical 2D x-ray, we may take a CBCT. When it comes to implant placement, a CBCT is required to verify that a patient is a good candidate. Once the doctor can view the anatomy of the nerve, sinus, and jawbone width, planning of the implant size and finial position may begin.
In cases where orthodontic movement is planned, a CBCT image provides critical information. It allows the doctor to know where the teeth are located within the jawbone and the movements that are safely possible. We do not take a CBCT scan on every patient – it is based on your findings, symptoms, and concerns. CBCT imaging is an incredible technology that allows us to comprehensively diagnose and plan the most appropriate treatment for you.
Can You See A Tooth Fracture On CBCT?
CBCT offers high-quality 3D images that are very helpful for identifying dental root fractures. Typically, a fracture has to be very severe for a 2D image to show it. However, on a CBCT, because the doctor can look at the tooth from all angles and sides, fractures are more easily detected.
Is A CBCT Scan Harmful?
Because of the digital technology and the way that the machine operates, the Dental CBCT radiation dose is very low. For comparison, the dose is much less than that of a hospital CT scan. The amount of radiation from our dental CBCT is the same, if not less, than as if you were to take a round-trip flight from NYC to Europe. Rest assured that we truly care about your health and will only prescribe a CBCT when necessary. The health risks of unchecked dental issues, such as infections, progressing unaddressed are much more detrimental than the risk of receiving a CBCT scan.

LASER THERAPY WITH THE DIODE LASER
Precision and Comfort in Dental Care
Baltimore Dental Co. believes everyone deserves comfortable and advanced dental care. To make this happen, we use a diode laser, a modern tool that changes how we do many dental treatments. This laser lets us perform procedures with less pain and faster healing than traditional methods. Instead of scalpels or stitches, the laser uses focused light to treat your gums and other soft tissues. This means less damage to the area around the treatment site and less discomfort for you after the procedure. Because the laser helps your body heal faster, you can return to your normal routine quicker. We choose technologies like a diode laser to give you the best dental experience possible, making your visits more comfortable and your treatments more effective.
