Dermal Fillers: what can they treat?

Dermal fillers are placed in areas of the face to improve the appearance of those fine lines and wrinkles that are often the result of aging. As we age, we lose volume in our skin as collagen production decreases and our skin becomes drier.

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally occurring polymer found in the body that retains that plump, healthy appearance by keeping our skin cells hydrated. When injected as part of a dermal filler, HA will smooth out those tiny lines and wrinkles by minimizing the rate of natural evaporation in the skin.

It enables your skin to “hold onto” its natural moisture longer, making those natural lines less visible.

Dermal fillers can be used to treat:

  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Lines around the lips
  • Thin lips
  • Lost lip volume
  • Scars on the face

Dr. Romay will discuss your cosmetic concerns and goals to be sure that dermal fillers are the best solution for your needs. We also offer Botox® Cosmetic injections to treat a range of cosmetic concerns.

Are dermal fillers painful?

Dermal fillers should not cause pain. Placing dermal filler injections will be done with the use of a local anesthetic. If the lips are being treated, you may experience minor swelling immediately after the injections which will dissipate in a few hours.

Can I sleep on my face after dermal fillers?

You should avoid sleeping on your face for at least 24 hours after getting fillers to avoid any type of unwanted complications. Afterward, it is safe to sleep on your side once the filler has settled.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Dermal fillers are completely safe to use. However, it is essential to use only those approved by the FDA. If an accredited professional injects the fillers, it should be a  harmless procedure.

Will my dermal fillers look natural?

If an accredited professional injects your dermal fillers, yes, they can look very natural. Dermal fillers will usually give you a natural look. Therefore, choosing the best dermatologist you can find to administer the injection is important.

How long do I have to wait to see the results after getting fillers?

You will be able to see a change instantly with most types of fillers. However, your body can swell after the injections. You’ll see the real results in the course of the next 2-3 weeks after the swelling completely fades.

What can I expect immediately after fillers?

After fillers, patients can expect redness, bruising, and minor gum tenderness. This generally goes away after a few days. Pain can be managed using an OTC pain reliever. Some patients may also experience numbness for the first few days following treatment.

What can you not do before 24 hours of fillers?

Patients should avoid caffeine and any other drinks that cause dehydration for at least 24 hours before getting dermal fillers. Dehydration will slow your healing process. We also recommend avoiding foods high in salt, as this can cause dehydration as well.
