What To Expect When Getting Porcelain Veneers

Minor imperfections in our smile can make a big impact on our lives. When you aren’t confident in smiling, it can be difficult to express your true joys and emotions in life. Porcelain veneers in Glyndon, MD, can help improve the look and feel of your smile. While getting any dental treatment can be anxiety-producing, veneers are less invasive than many other cosmetic procedures. But the more you know about your veneer appointments going in, the better you’ll feel in getting the treatment you need.

The Process for Porcelain Veneers in Glyndon, MD

For most patients, getting porcelain veneers is a three-appointment process. The first appointment is your initial consultation. During this time, your dentist will examine your mouth and discuss your cosmetic goals with you. Veneers can be used to treat a variety of imperfections in your smile, such as:

  • Discoloration
  • Minor chips and fractures
  • Misshapen/Short teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

After examining your bite, your dentist can determine if porcelain veneers are the right treatment for you. If so, you’ll be scheduled for two additional appointments. Depending on the complexity of your case, however, you may be able to begin treatment that same day.

Preparation

During your first appointment, your dentist will prepare your teeth for treatment. This can include a few different procedures, but the most common are cleaning your teeth and removing a small layer of enamel. Porcelain veneers are covers that fit over your natural teeth. Although they’re thin, veneers won’t fit comfortably over your teeth as-is. Instead, your dentist will need to remove some of the enamel to make room. During this appointment, your doctor may administer local anesthesia to reduce any pain or discomfort while working.

Veneers are color-matched to fit the shade you want in your smile. If you aren’t getting a full set of veneers for your entire smile, your dentist may recommend teeth whitening treatment before veneers. While this may add an additional appointment to your treatment, it can help ensure your smile is the perfect shade you envision.

Impressions and Fabrication

After the teeth are prepared, your dentist will then take impressions. These impressions are used to fabricate your permanent veneers. While you’re waiting for your veneers to be made, your dentist will create temporary ones to protect your teeth. Veneers can take a few weeks to make, so it’s important that you take care while eating and brushing with your temporaries to avoid any damage or decay.

Permanent Set

Once your veneers are made, you’ll just need to return to get them placed. Your dentist will remove your temporaries and apply the permanents. They’ll then make any necessary adjustments to ensure the fit is comfortable and durable.
